Book Review: “Uprising: How to Build a Brand and Change the World” (Plus a chance to win a FREE copy)

Scott Goodson's book, "Uprising"

I love to read — it’s one of the reasons I do book reviews here (so that I have access to all the latest and greatest business books).

But this, my friends, is a book you absolutely must read if you’re serious about building something bigger than yourself.

I know lots of entrepreneurs who want to use their business to create positive change. Now you’ve got the book to help you do just that. It’s got real-life examples of little tiny businesses that sparked entire movements and built something that changed the way our world works.

It’s not often that I get to read something that offer such a unique perspective on marketing. (Can you tell I loved it?)

I’ll be interviewing the author, Scott Goodson of Strawberry Frog on Tuesday. Join us live at Noon (Pacific) or tune in afterward to listen to the recorded podcast.

And if you’d like a copy of this book for yourself? Well, I’ll be giving away at least one copy on April 15, 2012. Check the entry deets below.

How do you keep branding consistent across all platforms?

    • http://www.thewordchef.com Tea Silvestre

Great question, Jenn. One of the things you must do is create
your logo (or have your graphic designer create your logo) in different formats so that you’ll have it available for use in different platforms. Start with something that will fit in a square space. That one will get used a lot all over the web. You’ll also need something that will look good in a horizontal layout (like a web banner). Think about all the different spots you need to brand yourself, research the image sizes they require, and then create your Identity pack. Another good thing to have is a tag line or slogan that you can repeat by heart. This should follow you around everywhere, too.

How to build a new brand?  From Virtual Assistant to Video Advisor… or a business who loves making your video(s) GREAT?  I get stuck on branding as anything more than a logo or a face.

Hi Tanya – one of the things you might want to take a look at is my Branding tutorial page (scroll back up and look in the sidebar for the link). There’s a post there on my 9 Step process which will get you started.

How do you build a brand that helps you keep your identity as a person? For example, everyone is an “Avon Lady” but how do you let people know that and stay unique about it.

Oh! That’s a good one, Ashley. I’ll be addressing this one in a future blog post for sure (so, stay tuned).

  • Megan Everett

I want everything in my branding and communications to exude my “secret sauce”….. But I struggle with 20 years of being very “corporate and professional” — There’s a persona that goes with that – that masks one’s personality and uniqueness in the name of credibility. And my clients instinctively trust that persona – so perhaps I don’t want to completely abandon it. Besides, I think there are aspects of it that are authentically me, or that I have become.

Hey Megan – you’re not alone here. Did you see the interview I did with Erika Napoletano (author of Unpopular)? She works for lots of big companies and corporations AND is totally herself. The secret? There are actual people working at those companies. Humans. Just like you and me. And they would actually rather work with someone with a personality. (I know it’s hard to believe, but I swear it’s true.) Credibility will not be lost!
