This is a great infographic and truly reveals the need for better education and expert guidance in the solo business community. I was shocked by the level of dissatisfaction and lack of results. While I hear this from small business owners, I had no idea it was so widespread.

Exactly what I thought! As someone whose work IS the education of small biz owners, I find it extremely distressing. Hoping to find some real solutions in the near future — it’s now my #1 goal!

I think the most shocking thing to me was that a third of respondents were over 40 and the majority of respondents have been in business for less than 2 years. Tea, I think I saw some additional numbers you have where if you include “over 30″ that accounts for a pretty big chunk of the respondents. That says a lot of people are jumping into solo business for the first time at a much older age – sounds like a product of a bad economy? It’s also encouraging in terms of options and opportunity, if people feel like they can make a living on their own without a “job” in the 9-5 I-have-a-boss-and-a-pension sense.

Great stuff, I love numbers like this and the infographic is awesome. And at least I’m not alone on the time management thing :)

Thanks, Carol Lynn. As I get older (I’m closing in fast on 50), it doesn’t seem weird to me that most of the folks are over 30. My contemporaries seem to be a lot more willing than this age group used to be to try crazy stuff.  But yes, I do think the bad economy had much to do with it.

The thing I find concerning is the large number who aren’t making it past the two year mark. We know from other stats that many businesses “fail” before the 5 year mark, so obviously something more needs to be done to help these folks  succeed.

Great info here, Tea. Thanks for sharing.

Great information. What’s frustrating is that I feel like I know some of the things I need to do to get better results but just don’t have the time. Perhaps it’s time for an ROI analysis on hiring some help for stuff like website updates, etc.

Time! It’s a problem for a lot of us, Laura. Check out this free webinar I’m doing with Rachel of Pronagger tomorrow (it’s free): http://www.anymeeting.com/PIID=EF53DA84894F

Very cool – who made the infographic? It’s brilliant.

    • http://www.thewordchef.com/ Tea Silvestre, aka Word Chef

Thanks, Leisa. I made it using Piktochart.com — takes a bit getting used to, but it’s pretty helpful if you’ve got some good data to share.

Fabulous infographic, Tea. Looking forward to reading your report. I’ve recently gone through a similar survey/report process on the subject of digital publishing for entrepreneurs. It’s quite a project to put something like this together. Congratulations!

Thanks, Denise! Yes, I remember taking your survey (and getting your report). It IS a big undertaking to be sure. Very much appreciate you stopping by!
